A Fiberglass / Cosmetic Apprentice is committed to learning the specific disciplines needed to work in a full-service marina. The apprentice may also be exposed to yard operations, sailboat rigging, painting (preparation & application), composite repairs, marine systems and mechanical work.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Apprentices will focus on the cosmetic and fiberglass departments and can expect to learn and assist in performing those skillsLearn how to prep surfaces to include stripping, scuffing, sanding, masking and priming surfacesLearn the skills required to repair and build using fiberglass materials and resins.Assist in applying coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel or lacquer, as appropriate, to decorate and protect interior and exterior surfaces, trimmings and fixtures of boatsAssist in performing general boat maintenance and service work to include, but not limited to: waxing, bottom painting and zinc replacementGain familiarity with hauling and launching team logisticsWork closely with and assist fellow crewmembers as neededAssist with inspecting, maintaining, and repairing boats of all kindsConduct thorough assessment prior to starting a job including: acknowledging the budgeted time and timeframe for completion, proving the system and the element requiring service, sourcing parts if requiredAssign parts and purchases to the appropriate vessels/ticketsAvailable to work overtime when requiredOther duties as assigned by Manager
Safety and Environmental Responsibilities
Follow SHM Safety and Environmental rules and complete required related training.Wear proper personal protective equipment (may include safety glasses, gloves, life jackets and/or hard hats) as required for the task or work area.Report all accidents, injuries, spills and near misses immediately.
Technical and Physical Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent preferredTechnical school training preferredAbility to ascend and descend a ladderAbility to work in confined spaces and all weather conditionsAbility to lift 50 poundsBasic boat handling skills preferred Must possess a valid drivers license
