ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
The University of South Florida Libraries - Tampa Special Collections supports the research and teaching missions of the University of South Florida by acquiring, preserving, and providing access to strategically developed collections of rare and unique primary sources and other, relevant materials.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Associate Director of Digital Initiatives, and in accordance with the procedures of the USF Libraries Special Collections, this Collections Specialist position will involve the generation of transcripts, alt-text, and captioning for digital library resources to encourage the broadest possible access to our digital collections. The role will supervise student employees to ensure all resources in the collection are brought to standards and current file formats.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Review over 150,000 digital collections items, as well as born-digital acquisitions, and digital collections exhibits to determine accessibility requirements and improvements.
Co-develop a plan to track, conduct, delegate, and finalize the project by 2026.
Create and upload accessible transcripts, alt-text, and captioning for digital collections items. Prepare accessible transcripts, alt-text, and captioning for born-digital
objects, digital exhibits, and other web content.
Reprocess digital collections files into accessible PDF-A formats with full optical character recognition.
Supervise student employees and coordinate schedules and workloads to ensure timely completion accessibility work on Digital Initiatives materials.
Other duties as assigned.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Library Science, English, History, or related field and two years of experience. Directly relevant work experience may be substituted for the degree requirement on a year for year basis.
FLSB1310 Equivalency:
4 years of directly relevant experience may be substituted for bachelor's degree.
PREFERRED:
Experience working with archival materials. Familiarity with digital collections repository and exhibiting platforms. Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud.
